Everday Brightness: ‘Answers’ Incoherence

  • Lee · 1 year ago
    Good post...

I wonder too how hard it was for him to set aside what he learned from observation, given that he must have had to calculate the size, movement, and vast distances from Earth of astronomical objects. Those distances alone must’ve resulted in some rather agonized prayer sessions in which he surely asked God why the universe appeared to be so old. What a relief it must have been for him to go straight from earning his doctorate to working for AiG, where he could do a proper brain-dump and be himself

I really do not know how, when presented with the evidence of cosmic scales, someone can maintain the belief of a 6,000 year old universe. It does not make sense to me... worst still when the person is able to do the maths up to PhD level.

‘Obviously’ it was just a mathematical problem for him and he ignored the implications of the model and all the physical evidence for it.

It’s the only ‘answer’ I can give... why I do not know.

    Lee

    PS

I just had to open one of his articles... do you think I will enjoy the read?

I just read "Light-travel time: a problem for the big bang"...

    oh dear.

I want to say a rude word, but you do not want foul language on your blog.

I will just therefore say 'Belgium'... absolute and total 'Belgium'

The man is a right ‘Belgium’ and no mistake.

Hope you do not mind me saying that...

I love the way fundies feel the need to use their qualifications (often in the wrong area).

I saw Ken Ham preach last year. He was also heavily playing on this false dichotomy. I'm also reminded of a John Wesley quote approximating "if there is one error in that book there may as well be a thousand"

In some ways, these folk remind me of "paul" talking about people with less faith and the others should not damage their fragile faith.

However, as an atheist, I have no such oblgation :-)

    Hey guys,

Sorry it's taken so long to reply.

Lee, you're absolutely right. The guy's a Belgium. And, I do appreciate your keeping it clean, but in cases like this, you can cuss all you like as far as I'm concerned. It's what I did when I read about this guy.

Billy, you actually sat through a sermon by that guy? I don't think I'd have been able to do that. Ever. Even as a Christian.

    You're a braver man than I.

To be honest, I left at the interval in disgust after realising that there would be no Q&A session. I only identified one other possible atheist (based on the fact that he didn't close his eyes either during the opening prayer). I am happy to say, that quite a few people left after the first session - many looking angry.
I remember him writing on his blog that they sold very little of their propoganda nonsense, which came as a surprise to him. It was also funny when he was listing about 6 or 7 former chrches in the area which were mow warehouses, pubs or climbing walls - given his interpretation of reality, I'm not surprised.

I was sitting next to the minister and frequently blurted out an audible "bollocks" :-)

    Lee,

You'll probably not read this as you've moved on, but I think my meaning for "foul language" was mostly in the context of abusive behavior. Well-placed cuss words can be useful and applicable.

    Just a qualification. :)

    Hi JC

    You are probably wrong :-)

I think I understand - I will try not to swear too much here anyway. I can swear over at my own blog if I have to
